Our little Jake came down with Croup last night and he's been gasping and wheezing then "barking" in between. I hope this subsides soon because both he and I need more than 3 hours of sleep, especially him so that he can get better. My poor sweet boy, I feel so bad for him.

Poor baby

It's the worst when kids are sick! Poor little guy!  How old is he?  We are finally getting some sleep with our little one. He still has a nasty cough, but for the most part, he is able to sleep.  Our dr. prescribed Albuterol for the wheezing and PediPred for the "bark."   I'm not sure how much the Albuterol helped, just made him really hyper, but since he's been taking the PediPred, he's improved alot!  Hope little Jake feels better soon.  This stuff is really going around this year.  My husband and I were just saying this morning that we have all had some kind of sickness since August...Luke and I have never really gotten rid of our cough, hubby has a sore throat again this morning, and the baby has had 2 colds.  Makes me want to move somewhere warm!!  Try to get some rest...nap with Jake!!

Again

He was up most of the night again :( . He's 16 months now. He was doing so much better last evening and I was hoping that he would sleep the full night but he woke up around midnight and stayed awake until around 3am then woke back up a little before 6am. I wish that there was an aspirator that could just get all of that yucky stuff out of his lungs in one shot. Oh well, I guess that through this I can re-gain my appreciation for the peaceful slumber that I usually enjoy.

I am sure your doc has already told you , but make sure you get some sort of humdifier going in the room. Croup is brought on with the dry air in our homes. Our homes in winter with the heat on is like the dry seheria desert (sp!) . Moisten the air and the airway will not be as welcoming to viruses.

Steam showers for in the middle of the night onsets, if this doesn't work wrap him up and take him outside. The cold air does wonders to open up the airway. That actually works the best for my son. The cold air.

We too have prednisone for him and a inhaler because the virus affects his airway and swells and he becomes stridrus and its just not fun!

If he gets to the point when you can see his ribs while he is breathing and it appears that the skin is sucked in between the ribs it is time to call the doc, if they are not in the office go to the er. He will need a breathing treatment. (Most docs offices can do it, that is why I would call your docs office first if they are open)

Thanks

We do have a humidifier going in his room and I've taken him into the bathroom after he's waken up in the middle of the night and done the whole steam shower thing. We took him outside last night and after that he seemed to be doing much better but, as you know, the middle of the night is the toughest so he just wound up waking in a few hours. I'll see how he is today and through the night tonight and might take him to the doc tomorrow depending. We'll see. Thanks for the advice. I hadn't heard about the whole "seeing their ribs" thing before, so that's good to know.

croup

I know that it can become very scary--it is for us, I think that my sons case goes to the extreame side of things. The rib thing is when they become stridrus and having more difficult time breathing. The cold air works the best for us ! My son gets very adjetated when we do the shower as he gets too hot and then makes the breathing more difficult. The cold air seems to help with the swelling. I also keep popcicles on hand and he works on one of those after we get things under control. For him it seems to help the swelling in his throat ?? (may be that he just gets to have a treat ! who knows !)

Good luck--take a nap today, its a good day to do that

Plug in vapor

Someone here recommended a plug in vapor thing...we bought one and it is really strong!!   I only used it a couple of nights when Shawn was coughing really bad, but once he started clearing up, I think a regular humidifier works fine.  I will definitely keep them on hand in case a cough or cold comes on really quick!

How is Jake feeling?

A little better

I haven't been on here for a couple of days, but Jake is doing a little better now. He's still not sleeping very well, but he has at least been able to get some of that yucky stuff up from his lungs. Thanks, to everyone, for the help.
