Halloween costumes

OK, so I know it's a little early to be talking about Halloween, even if the commercial world is all geared up for it already...But I'm just curious what you all do for your kid's costumes. Do you buy or make them? Which ones worked and which did not?

Garage Sale or resale shops
I try to get my costume at garage sales or resale shops. That way you can get the really cute and warm costumes for just a few bucks instead of 30-40 dollars/piece. This year I found a ladybug costume for my daughter and a dinosaur for my son. They are both very cute and I can't wait to see them for Halloween.
make them
usually I make them, there are some many things around the house that has dual purpose. The kids usually love them too because they fit better and they are more like real clothes. The sticky foam is great and so is heatnbond, you can get these at micheals or hobby lobby. we think about halloween year-round. sometimes we trickor treat inthe winter just to say hello to the neighbors that never come out. we've been candybars, flowers, every superhero, crabs, spiders, princess, athletes, sandwich, m&ms, etc. Lynn
Resale
I do the same thing, no sense in paying an arm and a leg for something they are only going to wear a few times.
Only a few times??? our kids
Only a few times??? our kids dress up almost everyday. my middle one went to school in parts of hers last year. never stop the madness...
Disney Store!!
The Disney Store usually marks their costumes down right before Halloween, so we've been lucky to find the princess characters there. And yes, they do not wear them just once, they love to play dress up in them all year round! We also check out the sales after halloween and hold onto that for the following year. Last year we found a ton of stuff that was at least 75% off so we have a huge tote of Halloween items!
Does anyone have any ideas on how to make a penguin costume? My 8 year old nieces loves penguins and I kind of popped the idea in her head about her being a penguin, I told her I'd help her make a costume. I'm thinking black sweatpants and maybe some white felt but I have no idea about the feet or head/face.
Family Fun
I am lucky to have my mom that always wants to make my boys costumes. Check our familyfun.com; they always have really cute, unique and easy to make halloween costumes. This year my 7 year old is going to be a lion tamer and my 17 month old gets to be the lion!! LOL

yellow foam
get 3 sheets of yellow foam cut out the shape of feet and bill. Use her shoe string, punch holes in the ankle part of the feet and tie them on. The bill you can use a headband, stick it on the top and put the band around her face instead of on top of her head. If she is really small, use the fabric covered cheapies. they usually are very loose anyway. That is a really cute idea. Lynn
Depends
This is only the second year I'll be making/buying costumes. Last year I bought one for my daughter because it was what I had time for. We sat on my mom's front porch and passed out candy. This year I think I am going to put her in a pair of pajamas and ruffly socks, put her hair in a ponytail on top of her head and call her Riley Roo Who. This is her nickname anyway and she looks like a who from Whoville when we put her hair up. I don't know that we're doing anything for Halloween since she's so young and we're not in town with my family. If her daycare does something, then I will dress her up. If not, I'll probably put her in a Halloween Tshirt and call it a day.
I have one sister who makes the kids costumes and another that buys them. Either way the kids are cute and wind up being what they want to be. Last year they were all Star Wars Characters, including their horse!!! It was too funny to see my 11 month old nephew sitting up on top of a horse dressed as Yoda and the horse was Chewbaca.
costumes
Well I usually buy the kids their costumes every year since it is usually so much easier.I try and catch the disney store when they mark them all down since my daughter loves princess. I also try and sell off there old ones so hopefully some lucky mom will not have to pay full price like me. I have a few things left listed in the classifieds now. Does anyone know how to make a adult size tutu out of tulle?
yes
lay the tulle out on the floor just as it came off the bolt. If you want the bottom to be scalloped use SHARP scissors and wave one piece of the two pieces. Also if you want it to be short, cut both off. Take long thread and a needle and weave it in-out on the uncut side in long strokes. then pull the thread or scrunch the tulle up around the size of the waist, tack it down and tie it off. take off the tutu, sew a ribbon around the handstitches you just did tacking down the start and finsih edge. Cut it open, put velcro on the edge of the ribbon- you're done. Lynn
