So I have had a fever, chills, and body aches for 3 days now and I just found from my doctor today I have breast infection. SO the meds they are putting me on I have to pump and throw it away for 10 days. Now only that but I was so scared when he told me that. Has anyone ever had one and if so have they have it more then once? I am terrified that I will get another one.

Had One

I've had a breast infection once before. My doctor told me the same thing pump and dump. One tip my doctor told me that worked for his wife and it did work for me also. Once I got back to nursing again that after little one was done then I go pump to see whatever else was still there gets out. I got mine because i wasnt completely emptying my breast after the feeding. So several ducts got clogged and infected. It was a pain to pump. But it didn't take long to get the tiny little bit left and then put the pump away again.

I only pump and give it to

I only pump and give it to her in a bottle . I kinda press on my breast when I was pumping to make sure it was all out and I even leave it one for about 1-2 minutes after there isnt anything coming out. I pump every 3-4 hours even during the night. I really hope this doesnt happen again.

Ouch

I had a clogged duct, and that was super-painful!  What med are they putting you on that you have to dump the milk?  With my clogged duct, they basically diagnosed me over the phone, and just gave me antibiotics.  I remember they were concerned it was an infection, and I assumed that's what the antibiotic was for.  I could still use my milk though.  It would KILL me to pump for 10 days and throw it all away.  I think I would have someone else dump it for me, I would want to cry!  Get better soon, that has to be painful!

pumping

If you are only pumping and not using a hospital grade pump this could be causing your problems. A store bought pump from target, or the baby store does not have the sucking times per minute/or the power to empty the breast completely. While you are pushing down on the breast to empty while pumping you must becareful not to crush any ducts you are sortta damned if you do, damned if you don't kind of thing. It is helpful yet it can be hurtful as well.

Had 7 times between three kids

I had an infection maybe a total of 7 times over the coarse of all the kids. I never had to pump and dump with the meds i was on. Now they told me that I may need to because the taste may change for baby, but I never had any trouble. Nursing is better than pumping, it will empty the ducts out better. Have you been pumping alot anyways ? That may be the trouble, or if you have extra milk and not emptying the breast out from nursing--you may have more than baby can drink-then nurse and then pump. I would call the doc and and ask for meds that you don't need to dump. Baby will do the best job at nursing instead of pumping. Make sure that you rotate baby while nursing so that the baby is in different positions so that the strongest sucking is rotated and always rotate which side you start on so that baby emptys each side alternating. Make sure baby is latched on correctly so that the breast can empty correctly as well. Warm showers(or hot packs) for a good let down helps.

I personally would not take a med that you can't nurse, your doctor is really not pro active for a nursing mom--- you have the right to ask for something else. The lactation nurses at the memorial hospital can help too. PLEASE call your doctor and insist a change. Breast feeding is best for mom and baby. Do this if you really want to continue ( your baby is only a month and half ?)

Good luck

I have had a few

Each time I just received a standard antibiotic when I had them. However depending on your Dr. and how much they really know about breastfeeding and/or endorse it they really don't warn you about much. Everytime I had one, I just called the office and described my symptoms and they called in an antibiotic and said nothing else. One of the last times I happened to be going to see Dawn Lanser for pump parts at the same time and she suggested that I probably didn't need the antibiotic and to just pump and pump and pump it out. Although I think sometimes mine was just a clogged duct and at least twice I definitely had the fever, chills and general ill feeling. One thing to be careful of is when you take an antibiotic it can cause Thrush in the baby, so watch for white spots in the baby's mouth. Mine never got them, but moms in my breastfeeding support group had problems with their babies and it took a month or longer to finally get rid of the thrush. I would make sure to eat yogurt because the acidopholous should help to prevent some of that, but not guaranteed.

My pump is medela advance

My pump is medela advance which I was told just the best you can buy. They did put me on a antibiotic but because I am allergic to anything with ammoxicillen or pennicillen bass the one they could put me on I couldnt feed the milk to her. I really wasnt in that much pain from my breast. It just turn bright red with a huge lump in it. It was the size of about half of my breast. It was more scary then anything. Yes I told my husband its going to kill me to have to throw my milk away.

should be a good pump... medela

The medela should be a good pump, although I was told that the if you were going to pump ONLY you should rent one from the hospital because those medelas from the hospital are the top end for pumping all the time.

I am sorry to hear of your allergic reaction to meds. I would still question what options there are for you. I would contact a laction nurse, either from Memorial hospital(Amy is very nice) or Dawn Lancer. There may be other options available for you. Some obs are just not up on the nursing end of things.

I was trying to think there is a vitamin/supplement that I took while nursing that is suppose to help with infection, and I can't remember the name off hand. It help me. I was also told to try to watch the fatty foods as well. Fat in the milk can clog easiley.

How is baby doing ? Taking the formula ok ? Have you fed formula prior to this infection and was the transition ok between formula and breastmilk? Good luck

formula

Yeah she has formula everyday but only about 4-5 oz. You can tell she doesnt like it as well as breastmilk. I do have maybe 2-2 1/2 days of breastmilk in the freezer.

I never had a breast infection thank god but I have had a fungus infection on my nipples which was very painful. I had to put nystatin cream on them.
