Bekka heard the thunder
Bekka heard thunder for the first time!!
I was reading a book to Bekka last night and she had her cochlear implant processor on (she was born deaf) and it started to storm and she heard the thunder!! She made this screwed up, scared face and pulled her processor off and looked at me like " What the hell was that?!" It's amazing what we take for granted!! I think the other day when we were in the pool and she was floating around and staring at the sky she realized there's clouds. They were big fluffy white ones that were moving pretty fast.
I kinda like going at her pace it makes you appreciate the small things in life!! I love you Bekka!!

Yea! :)
Yea for Bekka for hearing the thunder! I bet you were so happy to see her respond to it!

That is soooo sweet and wonderful!!! You're definatly right, so many take little things for granted. I agree with you at going at a slower pace to appreciate things on a different level :)
:)
Wow, that is great!
Implants
That is cool that she got to hear the thunder. I studied ASL in high school and was just curious what made you decide to do the cochlear implants and not just let her grow up deaf. I know if I was in that situation I would have a hard time but was curious what you based your decision on. Thanks!
Broader spectrum for communication
I wanted her to be able to communicate with as many people as possible and in many ways. She has a hearing impaired teacher through Berrien Sorings Hearing Impaired school which teaches the auditory verbal method. She also does some simple signs and we use PECS (picture exchange system) she is getting evaluated in a couple weeks for an augmentive communication device. Bekka also has cerebral palsy which hinders some of the benefits of the cochlear implant. Like she can't sit up on her own so the processor coil which magnets to her head falls off or gets rubbed/bumped off ALL the time! We've even shaved a spot on her head and used toupee tape to try to get it to stay better. If the coil isn't on her head she can't hear. We just want her to have the best and getting a CI was what we thought was the best. She can say "Hi" and is mmaking new sounds everyday. We're hoping that when she gets her new wheelchair and has more trunk support (gross motor skill) that she will be able to concentrate more on lip movements (fine motor skill).
